A Canvas Print for a Holiday Gift

Good friend of ours Clint Reif asked for some help with a Christmas present for his girlfriend. He supplied us with this amazing artistic shot of his professional dancer girlfriend Jessica. We had no other choice than to hook him up with a 16″x20″ glossy canvas print. The print was image wrapped and stretched on our 3/4″ stretcher frame, gift wrapped and shipped off just in time for Christmas.

Alaia Surfboards by Tom Wegener and Drifty

Just as I thought Stand Up Paddle Boarding was the hottest new craze, and prior to that fishes and quads, I believe another has surfaced - the Alaia surfboard by Tom Wegener. Based off of the ancient Hawaiian surfboards more than 1,000 years ago, the Alaia is a finless piece of wood that is sealed with oil. What makes these boards work is the hard edge of the rail that acts as a fin and the gentle curves on the bottom hold the board into the face of the wave. Unbelievable speed is created by flexing the board to fit into the wave. Tom states in a recent Surfline article that “There are lots of combinations of Alaia design that haven’t been put together yet that are extremely promising in terms of design innovation”.

With test pilots like Rob Machado, Dan Malloy, Dave Rastovich and Tom Carroll, these surfboards are being taken to the next level in surfing which can bee seen in Thomas Campbell’s upcoming new movie The Present. Rumor also has it that Tom Curren is ripping on his as well.

Just as my new issue of Surfing Magazine arrived in the mailbox, local HB shredda Sterling Foxcroft popped over with Matt “Drifty” Williams from Tom Wegener Surfboards in Australia. Matt is Toms apprentice and helps craft these Alaia surfboards. It was great to hang with him a bit and hopefully we will see him soon.

Yes, We Still Scan Photos!

Although it seems as if everyone supplies us with digital files these days, we still get jobs where we can scan an original photograph. For this recent project we scanned the original 4×6 photograph at a high resolution. We then cleaned, sharpened and color corrected the image in Photoshop. Next, we printed a 16×20 glossy canvas print that was spray coated for added protection. Finally, it was stretched on a wooden frame that was ready to hang or frame.

Del Mar Surf Station Wedding Canvas Print

Brett and Michelle from San Diego, CA, asked us to produce a canvas print to be displayed at their wedding. This print was printed on our Epson Matte Canvas and was stretched on a 20×30 frame. This wedding that overlooked the ocean was held at the Del Mar Surf Station which is an old train station in Del Mar, California. The photo was taken by John Schnack from Schnack Studios.
